The Kansas City Chiefs have waited on the quarterback front for years. Now at last they made their bold move to get the guy they want.

He is Texas Tech standout Patrick Mahomes. If there is any tag attached to this young man, it’s one word:  gunslinger. He was insanely productive his final year for the Red Raiders. In a game against Oklahoma he amassed over 800 yards of offense. It’s easy to imagine why he’d be the target. Production from the quarterback position has always been the rub for Kansas City during the Alex Smith era. That could change in the near future.

Mocks expert Henry Payne did a ton of work on Mahomes leading up to the draft. Here is a bit of what the Chiefs are getting.

"“Standing at 6’3″, 230lbs, Mahomes has the desired size and build for an NFL quarterback and is incredibly fun to watch. He can make all the throws accurately, even on the run. He has a cannon for an arm and he’s able to utilize it with an amazing deep ball.Mahomes throws with anticipation, makes quick reads and great decisions, however, it could be argued that his college offense put him in the position to do so.Inconsistent mechanics, but what cannot be doubted is Mahomes’ ability to throw the ball accurately and on time without proper form or technique. He gets it done – I saw numerous slant routes thrown with just his wrist, he’s a magician.”"

Grade:  B

The Chiefs have tried to stay patient on the quarterback front the past few years but it was evident the board wasn’t going to fall their way. So they decided to bite the bullet and go get their guy. Mahomes is the polar opposite to Alex Smith from an arm talent stand point. We’re talking Brett Favre levels. Andy Reid knows that if he can get the young man to play under control, Kansas City might have something special.
