Daryl Washington Needs An NFL Team To Complete Comeback
By Erik Lambert
Former Pro Bowl linebacker Daryl Washington cleared a gigantic hurdle, gaining permission from the NFL to gain reinstatement to the league.
This means the man can participate in full activities for the first time since 2013. For those with only passing knowledge of his situation, here’s a recap. Washington twice violated the league substance abuse policy between 2013 and 2014, resulting in two suspension. The first for four games and the next an entire season. He compounded this mess by getting convicted for aggravated assault in an incident that saw his former girlfriend break her collarbone.
Needless to say the NFL wanted to gain as much distance from that story as possible. So his suspension was extended all the way through the 2016 season. It was made clear he would not be allowed back in the league until the legal issues were resolved and he complied with every requirement set before him regarding reinstatement. At last he done that.
Washington was 27-years old the last time he played a pro football game. He’s now 30 and eager to regain the superstar form he once had. It’s true. The man was a playmaker for Arizona during his peak. From 2012 to 2013 in 30 games he had over 200 tackles, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions. That’s eye-popping production for an inside linebacker.
Even with this victory, the fact remains Washington needs a team to employ him in order to complete the comeback. There are zero indications that the Cardinals will be willing to accept him back. He has a badly tarnished reputation and also hasn’t played in over three years. In truth his past dominance is likely the only thing that even gives him a chance. Otherwise there is a strong likelihood he’d be nothing more than a blip on the radar.
After all, men with a history of violence against women tend to disappear fast these days.
