15. We’re pretty happy with the way this draft worked out. We landed a top-tier talent in Malik Hooker at 11, and addressed our pass rush at the end of the round. We considered going for a CB here, but with the depth left on the board we figured we’d wait until 42. Plus, we’d already addressed our secondary with Hooker.

Taco Charlton would have been an option here had he made it past the Falcons. He didn’t. We may have chosen Harris anyway.

As a DE prospect, Charles Harris does one thing really well: get after the quarterback. And there’s arguably no role that the team needs filled more than pass rusher. He’s not the well-rounded player that the Saints would have had in Derek Barnett, but he possibly has more upside as a rusher than Barnett. He has speed — more than his 40-time suggests — and has bend and counter moves. He has arguably the best spin move in this draft class. The Saints landed a ball-hawk in Hooker early in the round. The best way to maximize the returns on that pick are through the pass rush.

Harris does struggle against the run, and it’s unclear if bulking up to fix that problem will come at the cost of some of his pass rushing ability. It might serve the Saints well to dip back in to the EDGE pool later in the draft, perhaps after addressing CB and OT. The 32nd pick could also offer interesting trade value, as it includes a 5th-year option that any later pick does not. But if Harris makes it to 32 the Saints will have no problem walking to the podium.
. DE. Missouri. Charles Harris. 32. player
