player. 28. Despite the 12-4 finish in 2016, the Raiders are in need of quite a bit of help, especially on defense. In a talented class with needs in many different spots, this pick is simply a matter of taking the best player available, as well as a player with as much upside as almost anyone in this class.
Melifonwu is an absolute freak of an athlete — in fact, he is one of the best athletes that has ever graced the combine. He’s truly a pick that embodies the Raiders brand that was molded by the late great Al Davis. But Obi is more than just a great athlete.

Turn on the tape, and it’s easy to see that his game is legit. He’s a cornerback converted to safety that has ball skills that will translate to the next level, logging six interceptions over the last two seasons. Given his size, Melifonwu isn’t as physical as many would like him to be, but coming downhill, he’s an effective tackler that can still get quite a bit better.

Lastly, he’d be a great fit for the Raiders alongside Karl Joseph. The defense could line up either safety at either spot, giving them versatility and creativity in the back-end of the secondary. Reggie Nelson had an up and down season at best, and being another year older in 2017, it’s hard to see things getting any better for the veteran safety. Obi can come in and play right away and has the potential to develop into the latest stud drafted by the reigning Executive of the Year.
. DB. UConn. Obi Melifonwu. 24
