San Francisco 49ers. 2. player. 42. . .

Mitchell Trubisky, QB from North Carolina:

There’s no way that John Lynch can be satisfied with just the signing of Brian Hoyer. Having a backup quarterback to be the face of your franchise, isn’t what I’d consider a good start to your reign as a general manager. Sure enough, the 49ers can correct their quarterback situation with solidifying their face of the franchise. Trubisky has a lot of upside to his game but is still an extremely raw player with just his 13 career starts.

Having a player like Hoyer will allow Trubisky to learn from him and Kyle Shanahan. I understand that Hoyer has played for Shanahan before but he isn’t the long term solution.

Mitchell Trubisky should be their top option for this pick, for a number of reasons. At the combine, he displayed his athletic ability with terrific times in all of the agility drills (40-yard dash in 4.67 seconds). But he also showed good throwing mechanics, adequate arm strength and good accuracy with some nice zip on the football. This isn’t a pick that pays off today but it should pay off tomorrow and for many years to come.

Solomon Thomas, DE from Stanford:

After taking defensive lineman in two previous drafts, it seems odd for the 49ers to do it again this year. Personally, I don’t think it will happen but if it does, I’d think the pick would be Solomon Thomas. He’s done nothing but help his draft stock. From his overall tape to the combine, Thomas is generating a lot of buzz.

If they were to make this pick, Solomon Thomas would become a more consistent edge rusher for the 49ers. He’s relentless and is one of those rare players that gets better as the game goes on. Thomas has tremendous upside and could become the draft’s best player, when it’s all said and done.
