Isaiah Ford is a talented prospect that has had an up-and-down pre-draft performance, despite solid production and all-conference accolades…

A former high-school basketball star, Isaiah Ford made an impression in the VA tech football program early in his career. After a successful freshman campaign, Ford would finish his sophomore season breaking school records including touchdowns in a single season (11) and received first-team All-ACC honors. While his Junior season was a big-step forward in development or production, Ford demonstrated his importance to the Hokie offense. He finished 2016 with 79 receptions, 1,094 yards, and seven touchdowns.

Despite some early hype, a lackluster combine performance didn’t do any favors for his draft stock. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds and never seemed to boost his results from there. Ford does possess a lot talent, but is it enough to see him drafted early?

Weight: 195 lbs

Strengths

Isaiah Ford has received all-conference honors each season he was at Virginia Tech. While it doesn’t directly project his abilities at the NFL level, it demonstrates the impact he had on the Hokies’ offense. Ford is an excellent athlete, with good burst and acceleration out of his breaks. His basketball background is evident in his feet and jumping ability. Shown an ability as a deep-threat. Demonstrates good body control, positioning himself to make the catch anywhere on the field.

Weaknesses

Isaiah Ford put up a less-than-desirable 40-yard time, an official 4.61 seconds. While this isn’t overly concerning, Ford will need to convince teams that this won’t effect his skill set at the next level.  His unique athleticism shadows the lack of technique he displays at times. While he’s tall, he lacks the size in his frame to match-up against NFL-level cornerbacks. Needs further development as a route-runner, despite his bold claim that he’s the best in the class (video below).

Final Thoughts

Isaiah Ford is an intriguing prospect with excellent athletic traits and an ability to fight for the ball. His route-running needs development and he will need to size to his frame if he hopes to become a steady contributor in the NFL. However, his potential is high and he can thrive in the right system.
