After an unsurprisingly quiet offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers turn their full attention to the draft and finding playmakers for their shoddy defense…

So close, yet so far. The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be just a few playmakers away from their seventh Super Bowl title. Luckily for the black and gold, the 2017 NFL Draft is stocked full of defensive talent. And the only way the Steelers are ever going to vanquish the mighty New England Patriots…is the return of the Steel Curtain.

The Steelers have a window of opportunity here. They have a powerful offense that is capable of smothering opponents into position. They have a coach that is starting to feel pressure to win the big one. And a monolithic quarterback almost ready to ride of into the sunset.

The defense is the one big, huge, ginormous question mark. The Steelers are good enough to outscore opponents but the difference between AFC Championship losers and Super Bowl winners lies on the defensive side of the ball. But as luck would have it, the 2017 draft has a lot of prototypical contributors in the Steelers position of need, like edge rusher and in the secondary.

This draft will be an intriguing one for Pittsburgh, a crucial one for having continued success into the next era of Steelers football. And here is what I believe they will do to lay the groundwork for that new era…
