Davis Webb, QB, California

One of the biggest smoke-screens for the 2017 NFL Draft has to be Davis Webb in the first round. It’s a discussion but is more of a reach than anything else. He has the upside to be a starting NFL quarterback, but I don’t think he has first-round value in any variety of his tape.

At 6’5 and 230 pounds, size isn’t part of the question. Ball placement and not having enough arm strength is one area of concern. There are times that he stares down his receiver and doesn’t follow through his reads. But with what’s bad, there’s some excellent stuff on tape. Natural throwing motion and his release look effortless.

During his sophomore year, he started eight games and posted a stat line of 2539 yards, 24 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and  61.2 completion percentage. However, Webb was benched for Patrick Mahomes, and he transferred to Cal. In 2016, he started all 12 games for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 61.2 completion percentage.

The way his draft process has gone, I think he’s in a similar situation as Paxton Lynch. Personally, I wasn’t sold on Paxton Lynch in the 2016 NFL Draft and felt he was best to go in the second round. As for Davis Webb, I’m in the same boat. He could be a fit for a team like Cleveland or Arizona in the second round. He needs time to develop but depending where he falls; he could become serviceable as the Face of a Franchise.
