Prospect Overview

Derek Barnett is one of the most decorated players in Tennessee football history, and someone that has the potential to be a very good player in the NFL for a long time. The 2017 NFL Draft prospect was born in 1996 and is a Nashville native.

The in-state product committed to Tennessee as a four-star prospect and has been a model of consistency for the Vols, playing at a high level from the moment he stepped on campus.

As you can see from the graphs above, the 6-3, 259 pound Barnett doesn’t exactly have ‘elite’ athletic measurables. That will likely cost him a bit in terms of his overall draft stock, but at the end of the day, football is played on the field and there haven’t been many guys as productive as Barnett, even in a deep edge class.

Barnett left for the NFL after his junior season at Tennessee, and is one of the youngest players in the draft. He will be just 20 years old at the time of his being drafted, and will be 21 throughout his first season in the NFL.

It should be noted that Barnett improved his 40 yard dash time at the Tennessee pro day to 4.82, his vertical jump to 37 inches, and his bench press to 20 reps.
