Jonah Pirsig, OT, Minnesota: 2017 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Minnesota has produced a few late round steals on their offensive line over the years. Jonah Pirsig could very well be another one.
Pirsig didn’t find himself on the bench for too long. The ex-Golden Gopher found himself in the starting lineup as a redshirt-sophomore.
He also stuck around for awhile. He ended up starting on Minnesota’s offensive line for the final three years of collegiate career. On top of that, he only missed three total games in those three seasons due to injury.
Measurables
Height: 6’9″
Weight: 325 lbs
Strengths
Has prototypical build for an offensive tackle. He has wide shoulders, a decently trimmed midsection and lengthy arms.
Pirsig keeps himself balanced despite his large frame. He always keeps his knees bent and his strong legs cooperate with his physical, gritty style. As a result, he is perfectly built as a pancake blocker.
He packs some punch in his arms as well. Having strength in his hands is crucial to his success at the next level. This is a trait that separates the men from the boys on the offensive front.
Weaknesses
While he excels physically, he lacks athletic ability. He is not agile and struggles to keep up with speed-rushers. He also is slow off the jump, as his initial reaction speed is not as fast as it needs to be in the NFL.
He has issues changing direction. While he has great strength in his hands and legs, he struggles to adjust after his initial blocking punch.
Final Thoughts
He’s got almost all of the tools he needs. He’s got the height, the weight, he’s got the grit. He’s also got three years of starting experience.
His athleticism is the only thing holding him back, and that’s a big drawback. He’ll need to train like crazy if he hopes to make it at the next level. Expect Pirsig to go in the sixth or seventh round.
