The Houston Texans don’t have any real viable options at quarterback this season. With Tony Romo’s decision to retire, it’s even more desperate…

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo shocked the football world on Tuesday morning with the reported decision to retire from football. While the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos were reported to have interest in Romo being their starting quarterback, the decision by Romo to retire is an absolute dagger to the Houston Texans.

Houston was already desperate enough at the quarterback position, but with Romo out of the picture for now, they are going to probably have to make a move for another veteran player before seeing what unfolds in the 2017 NFL Draft, perhaps bringing in Jay Cutler, Colin Kaepernick, or someone else.

The biggest issue with the situation in Houston is the fact that they pick so late in the first round, in a draft that’s not getting great marks for its depth at quarterback.

Houston may have to make a move up in the first round to get the quarterback they covet, and in this year’s draft, that’s not necessarily a great situation to be in. Without Romo in the picture, the Texans’ quarterback position is made up of Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden.

Savage’s overall potential as a long-term solution is unknown at this point, but we all know what Weeden brings to the table. Add in the fact that Bill O’Brien needs quarterbacks to come in and be a specific fit for his system, and I think you have a slight recipe for disaster this season in Houston.

The Texans traded free agent flop Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns for cap relief, but gave up a 2018 second round pick in the process. They didn’t make many meaningful moves in free agency, and have plenty of needs outside of just the quarterback position.

What’s their best case scenario at this point?

Right now, the Texans are legitimately looking at a situation where Tom Savage is the week one starter. That would mean Bill O’Brien is putting his job on the line for a guy that has attempted 92 career passes and has yet to throw a touchdown.

This decision by Romo to go into the broadcasting booth is a major hit to the Houston Texans, and possibly the Denver Broncos as well. The big difference with the Broncos is, they have a former first round pick in Paxton Lynch waiting in the wings, and a guy in Trevor Siemian that showed he has some ability in his starts this past season.

Houston should be considered a team likely to move up in the draft with an additional fourth round selection and some ammo to move up and get the guy that can finally be ‘the guy’ for this franchise.
