The Green Bay Packers lost T.J. Lang in free agency, and Forrest Lamp could be an ideal match in the 2017 NFL Draft to replace him…

The Green Bay Packers are in a championship window, and after some key losses in free agency in 2017, the NFL Draft will be of paramount importance. With the loss of right guard T.J. Lang to the Detroit Lions, it seems like the ideal replacement for Green Bay is perhaps within reach, and that replacement is none other than Western Kentucky’s Forrest Lamp.

After watching Lamp play a couple of months ago, I wrote this:

"Lamp won’t be the most thrilling first round pick for a team, but he will be about as ‘sure’ of a sure thing as you can find. He’s proven he can be productive and play at an elite level for a long period of time. He already looks ready to start in the NFL without any major tweaks to his game, and I believe he could easily make a position switch upon being drafted. This is a phenomenal offensive line prospect who won’t get the headlines on draft night, but he’ll be a major asset to whatever team drafts him from the time he steps foot at their facility."

Lamp is a technician, and has been one of the most consistently great linemen in all of college football over the last couple of seasons. Despite playing at Western Kentucky, the competition he faced was never really any sort of match for him. Lamp played one of his best games of the season last year against the Alabama Crimson Tide and their vaunted defense.

The Packers may have to make a move up in the first round to get Lamp, who is an ascending prospect and attractive to teams after showing off versatility at the Senior Bowl and his pro day. Teams feel like he can play tackle, guard, or center at the next level.

What’s interesting about Lamp’s potential versatility is the fact that he would be replacing a guy in T.J. Lang that was known for his versatility and ability to start for the Packers at any position along the offensive line, even if his best position was right guard.

I personally believe Lamp could be a starter at left tackle in the NFL, and if there’s any NFL team that agrees with that, he could be drafted much higher than the Packers could afford to move up for. However, if teams genuinely view him as a guard at the next level, he could slip to the bottom half of round one, and if he gets past the Denver Broncos at pick no. 20 overall, the Packers should start to think about moving up to get him.

Lamp is going to be a consistent starter in the NFL for a very long time. As long as he stays healthy, I think he will be one of the best at whatever position he lines up at, and one of the most consistent in the league.

After losing a couple of starting offensive linemen in free agency, Lamp could be the perfect fit to slot in at any one of a number of positions and solidify the Green Bay offensive line.
