Final Stretch of Tony Romo Has Forked In Two Directions
By Erik Lambert
It looked like such a certainty that Tony Romo was going to be wearing Broncos orange for his career swan song in the NFL.
If only because Denver has long since established a reputation for getting old quarterbacks to the promised land. That dream for many Romo fans died with team president John Elway made it clear he’s not going to make any sort of push for the veteran. Why? The obvious reason that the Broncos aren’t devoid of quarterbacks. They have Trevor Siemian, who played well enough for his first season as a starter in 2016 and done forget former 1st round pick Paxton Lynch.
They have options. Thus Romo is deprived of a key landing spot that could put him in contention for a championship before age gets the best of him. In truth he has two primary choices left that make any sense for him. The first being to retire. Word is major television networks are salivating at the prospect of signing him as an analyst for their football programs. His celebrity and reputation make such a move a no-brainer.
If the competitive drive burns bright though? There is only one team left that seems to have a wide open slot for him to fill. That’s the Houston Texans. It just makes so much sense. They’re a Super Bowl-ready roster with a great defense and offensive weapons. Their only notable quarterback presence is Tom Savage. Somebody Romo could easily beat in a competition.
The fact that Houston is in Texas, not far from Dallas? Icing on the cake. It’s a matter of figuring out when the Cowboys will see the inevitable. No doubt they’re trying to convince Romo to stay on as backup. Being willing to pay his current salary is of course a prime tactic. Still, with the trade avenues exhausted they are almost compelled to release him if he presses the issue. It comes down to how he sees things.
If he wants to play, Houston is his next home. If he’s content with his career, then a lucrative position on television awaits.
