Ranking The 10 Greatest NFL Draft 1st Rounds of All-Time
By Erik Lambert
#5: 2001
Total draft slots: 31
Pro Bowlers: 17
The 2001 group is tied for having the most Pro Bowl players in a 1st round to make this list. The sheer depth is astounding. There were actually more really good players than busts, which is exceedingly rare. So how is it possible it ranks only 5th? The primary reason being that despite being a deep group, it’s not an all-time one. To date only LaDainian Tomlinson has made the Hall of Fame. No doubt running for over 13,000 yards and receiving for 4,700 more certainly helped.
Beyond him though it’s more just an array of the great-but-not-elite types. Michael Vick altered the perception of the quarterback position with his speed and athleticism. Reggie Wayne became one of the steadiest receiving weapons in the league. Justin Smith, Richard Seymour and Casey Hampton headlined a very strong defensive line contingent. It’s really a shame Drew Brees couldn’t be on the list. He would’ve be a difference-maker, but instead got take with the first pick outside round one.
