The Chicago Bears continue to add pieces to their roster in free agency, but make no mistake. Primary focus has shifted to the upcoming NFL draft.

What nobody can figure out is what the team plans to do with that #3 overall pick. The only truth that seems to have been revealed is they will go one of two ways. Either they will take the best defender available, or they will take a quarterback. No other position seems viable in the discussion. Thus the debate has commenced between people on both sides of the fence. Each holding a degree of logic to their arguments.

So here is how it should go and why.

1st Round

Okay. Okay. We get it. Ryan Pace constantly trumpets “Best Player Available” when referring to the NFL draft. That’s all well and good but the fact is as some point he’s going to have to get serious about finding this team a quarterback. The odds of one falling into his lap later in the draft are beyond negligible, especially in a weaker class like this one. The Bears have kicked this can down the road for long enough. It’s fine to take a serious shot at getting that franchise QB.
In many ways Mitchell Trubisky is the perfect choice. Not only is he a talented passer who fits well in the system the Bears run due to his accuracy, footwork and rhythmic passing, he’s also not ready to play. That makes the signing of Mike Glennon all the more key to making this pick viable. Glennon can play until he either proves he’s capable of being a top tier starter or Trubisky shows the coaches he’s ready to play. It’s a win-win at the most important position in sports.
. QB.
