Free agent defensive tackle Dontari Poe had a shockingly quiet market as the new league year opened. He’s now going to Jacksonville to visit the Jaguars…

The initial wave of excitement in free agency has passed but the Jacksonville Jaguars are not done making their presence felt. Armed with some of the most cap space in the league, the Jaguars are not playing any games so far in free agency, having already signed two of the biggest stars available in A.J. Bouye (of rival Houston) and Calais Campbell (of Arizona). Dontari Poe could be the next man up…

If Poe were to sign in Jacksonville — who just released defensive tackle Roy Miller — he would add to what is already one of the most improved defensive units in the league on paper.

We all know championships aren’t won on paper, but the Jaguars are putting together a talented roster, there’s no question about it.

Specifically on the defensive front, adding Poe would give the Jaguars a defensive line that includes Dante Fowler Jr., Malik Jackson, Calais Campbell, and Poe.

More from NFL Mocks

With Yannick Ngakoue and potentially another draft pick or two providing more edge pressure, the Jaguars would have an enviable group of front seven players, both off the edge and on the interior.

We warned a month ago that Poe could end up being one of the league’s most overpaid free agents, but apparently, the rest of the NFL agreed. Even the Chiefs had the opportunity to franchise tag their former first round pick after reaching a long-term agreement with Eric Berry, but they declined that opportunity and let Poe reach the market.

It’s not like Poe has had to wait a week or even two weeks into free agency to find a new team. The Jaguars would be a great landing spot, because they would likely offer Poe the chance to earn a new contract next offseason by giving him a hefty one-year contract, effectively a ‘prove-it’ deal.

Those types of deals are great for the teams that sign them, but also for the player if they can prove they deserve a bigger payday. Poe is still a young player, and the ceiling is obviously very high. If he can prove his back health is not an issue and play at a high level, he could earn himself a massive contract next offseason while playing alongside some of his most talented peers in the league down in Jacksonville.
