NFL Free Agency: Wins and Losses From Day One of Free Agency
Winner: Houston Texans
In one of the most creative trades not just in the history of the NFL, but maybe in all of sports, the Texans were able to unload one of the worst contracts in franchise history.
A major signing last year, quarterback Brock Osweiler was set to become “the guy” in Houston after signing a four-year $72 million contract. After a disappointing year that included a benching, the Texans found a way to get out of their agreement.
Cleveland, who entered the day with over $100 million in cap space, took on Osweiler and his contract, along with a handful of draft picks, for a mere mid-round pick.
Houston, on the other hand, is now free of Osweiler’s $16 million cap hit and able to hit the reset button at quarterback. Tom Savage will be returning and could potentially start the year as the Texans man at quarterback.
Another option would be for Houston to draft a young quarterback for O’Brien to mold into a franchise leader. The options are almost endless for O’Brien going forward, who must feel a great amount of relief for getting out from under Osweiler’s contract.
