NFL Free Agency: 49ers Reunite Kyle Shanahan and Pierre Garcon
Pierre Garcon and Kyle Shanahan worked together for two years in Washington
San Francisco is a very young NFL team that currently lacks leadership and has all the money in the world. New head coach Kyle Shanahan appears to have his fingerprints all over this roster early, evident by a reported free agent signing.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Pierre Garcon will join his former offensive coordinator in San Francisco on a lucrative free agency deal.
Mortenson reports that the 49ers will front-load Garcon’s contract in a way that the 30-year-old makes $16 million this season. The 49ers entered free agency with nearly $100 million in salary cap space, so this type of deal will make sense in both the short and long-term.
Garcon and Shanahan crossed paths while with the Redskins when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator from 2010-2013. Garcon’s best season came in 2013 under Shanahan when he finished with more than 1,300 receiving yards.
Entering NFL free agency, NFL Mocks writer Andrew Kim had this to say about Garcon.
"The 30-year-old receiver who amassed over 1,000 yards last season, Pierre Garcon could be a nice value pickup for a team needing that veteran possession receiver. With the Redskins tagging Kirk Cousins for another year, they might have to decide to resign either Desean Jackson or Garcon. I do not see both coming back to D.C and teams like the Rams, Eagles, Buccaneers, Ravens, and other teams that need receivers would be interested in a cheaper deal with Garcon."
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is rumored to be a trade target of Shanahan’s and the Garcon signing makes the Bay Area even more enticing for Cousins.
