The 2017 NFL scouting combine is barely half over and has already exhibited some remarkably explosive moments on and off the field.

There are plenty of qualifying instances for make a list of takeaways. Top linebacker Reuben Foster getting kicked out due to a confrontation with a hospital worker. Or the sad case of Derek Barnett who contracted a virus at the worst possible time. Something that may impact his performance. However, these are some subplots to the action thus far that really deserve the attention of fans everywhere.

The QB race is down to Trubisky and Watson

Often the combine is high noon where the top quarterbacks are able to separate themselves by showcasing their athletic prowess and ability to perform with precision in drills. Indeed that is what happened. While Deshone Kizer struggled with accuracy all day, Mitch Trubisky and Deshaun Watson traded shots all day. They finished with identical 40 times and were sharp in passing drills. There can be no doubt that the battle for being the top quarterback off the board in April is down to them.

John Ross reflects new direction of WR position

During the previous decade the direction of offensive football was centered around receivers with size. Men like Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss and Terrell Owens dominated the landscape. That trend however has undergone a shift. Thanks to Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham, it’s become about quicker, faster receivers. The culmination of this movement took place when the 5’11” John Ross out of Washington set a combine record with a 4.22 in the 40-yard dash. He cemented his status as a future 1st round pick.

Tight end group is so good and so diverse

It didn’t take long for people to realize just how special the tight end class of 2017 was. They set multiple records in the broad jump for starters and then took their showcase to the 40 where they put on an extravaganza. Not only did top prospect O.J. Howard hit 4.51 at 251 lbs, but Ole Miss standout Evan Engram left everybody in the dust with a 4.42. Not only is it an athletic group, but one with variety. There are big and burly ones and sleek, fast ones. Pretty much a type to fit every offense under the sun.

Antonio Garcia may climb into the top 32

In the commotion created by so many other stories, it was easy to overlook how many favors offensive tackle Antonio Garcia did for himself. Already on the rise due to his strong tape and performance at the Senior Bowl, he pushed things to the next level. Not only did he show up at 300 lbs in weight, something that was a concern for teams, he also delivered a strong workout. Given the lack of depth at offensive tackle in this class and his ability as a pass protector, there is now a reason to think he may just crack the 1st round.

Christian McCaffrey will be deadly in the right hands

Is he a true classic running back who can carry it 25 times in the NFL? That’s debatable but most would say unlikely. However, doubting Christian McCaffrey may prove unwise. He was the most athletic and versatile back at the combine, showcasing quickness and agility that made him such a nightmare for teams in the Pac-12. If he can land on a team with a coach that has some offensive creativity, he’ll be a lethal weapon in their arsenal.
