Ashland tight end Adam Shaheen is not well-known in the NFL Draft community, but he could be after the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine…

Adam Shaheen is not known to much of the NFL Draft community…

…yet.

The tight end prospect out of Ashland doesn’t have the resume of some of his peers in an elite class at this position, but he stands out among the crowd. Literally.

Shaheen is 6-7, 278 pounds with nearly 10-inch hands. He’s an incredible athlete and one of those guys that you just wonder how in the world did he not play at a bigger school?

Well, everyone’s journey to the NFL is different, and some take the long and winding road.

Shaheen, like a number of tight ends in recent years, began his college career as a basketball player at Pittsburgh-Johnstown, a Division II school where he played two seasons. He then transferred to Ashland to play football, and brought his phenomenal size from the hardwood to the gridiron.

Because of his background in basketball, Shaheen has exciting athleticism and skill as a pass catcher. Not only that, but he’s excellent after the catch. In the limited video available on this young prospect, you can see him blazing by defensive backs at nearly 280 pounds.

Oh and by the way — he’s hoping to run under a 4.8 at that size this week at the Combine. He reportedly ran a 4.72 in his pre-Combine training.

Shaheen obviously has room to grow as a prospect. As a former basketball player, he’s not necessarily known for his ability to get dirty and block. He plays the tight end position because of his elite size, and teaching him how to block will be secondary to the impact he is able to make in the passing game.

In a draft that features some of its best talent at the tight end position, Shaheen could find himself shooting up teams’ draft boards in the coming weeks. He’s expected to put on a show at the Combine, and with his measurables and athletic ability, there’s no doubt that he could vault himself into the day two mix of the draft.
