New York Jets Are In Line To Hold The #1 Pick In 2018
By Erik Lambert
It’s becoming more difficult by the day to feel good about the current or future prospects for the New York Jets going into the 2017 season.
They’re already a team that finished 5-11 last season. They’re slated to pick 6th in the upcoming NFL draft. Nobody is really thinking about it at the moment but the worst may yet be on the horizon for this luckless franchise. More than ever their maneuvering in 2015 did indeed seem like a desperate last-ditch effort to make a Super Bowl push. They looked pretty good down the stretch but fell painfully short in the season finale against Buffalo.
Now age has begun to catch up with them. Already they’ve begun cutting several key veterans from their roster in an effort to clear up cap space. All this without really having any capable replacements on hand to take over for them.
All four of the players mentioned are into their 30s. The moves aren’t overly surprising, but that doesn’t mean they don’t hurt. In essence they just released a reliable kicker and three of the starters on their offensive line. A group that managed to allowed just 35 sacks despite constant shifts at the quarterback position. Normally jarring changes like that don’t lead to good results.
This isn’t even covering the Darrelle Revis situation. All signs point to him being gone as well given his bloated contract and recent run-in with the law. That’s yet another veteran presence they’re about to lose without a credible replacement. If it doesn’t look like a full-scale rebuild is in the works at this point to some people, they need to find a new hobby.
This Jets team is overrun with question marks on both offense and defense. They don’t have a definitive answer at quarterback. As stated earlier their offensive line just lost a ton of proven experience. Their best weapons like Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Matt Forte showed bothersome signs of wear and tear last season. On defense they have few proven commodities aside from their defensive front.
That doesn’t even account for the apparent situation with head coach Todd Bowles, who just narrowly avoided getting fired. Everything about the New York Jets says it’s prepared for an even greater fall in 2017. One that could set them up to hold the #1 overall pick next year.
