NFL Draft:

1st Round (via NYJ)

1. player. 57. Now that the Bears have their quarterback, they’re free to operate throughout the rest of this draft with the sole purpose of improving the entire roster around Jimmy Garoppolo. At the same time this is a defensively focused draft. So they start with that side of the ball. First they swing a sneaky deal with the Jets to move down and pick up a high quality defensive lineman in Sheldon Richardson. It also removes the pressure of doing what’s next.
Taking a safety in the top five can garner a lot of criticism. By moving down to #6 the Bears avoid that minefield while scooping up one of the most exciting defensive playmakers to come around in some time. Malik Hooker had seven interceptions and three defensive touchdowns for Ohio State in his only year as a starter. He’s got size, length, speed, athleticism and ball skills. He’s everything Chicago doesn’t have.
. S. Ohio State. Malik Hooker

2nd Round

player. 57. Zach Miller and Dennis Pitta won’t exactly offer comfort to the tight end position given their injury records. So the Bears find a young body to bring in as well. Evan Engram was no joke at Ole Miss. A Jordan Reed-type of tight end who may not be an imposing blocker but scared defenses to death with his mix of quickness, speed and strong hands. Linebackers and safeties can’t cover him.. TE. Ole Miss. Evan Engram . 2

3rd Round

CB. Tennessee. Cameron Sutton . 3. player. 57. The cornerback makeover in the secondary can’t just end with one high-priced free agent. Chicago has to supplement it with a decent draft pick. Cameron Sutton probably would’ve been a higher pick if he hadn’t missed most of last season with a leg injury. He’s healthy now though and looked good in the Senior Bowl. He’s a physical press corner who can mirror receivers one-on-one and loves to hit in the running game.

4th Round

57. Note all the things that Alshon Jeffery does well. Wins frequent 50/50 jump ball situations, has great awareness down the field with a sneaky amount of speed to gain some seperation and excellent length at 6’3″. Those are all positives mentions about Josh Reynolds as well. The reason he’s not going higher is he’s not NFL-ready. Not in terms of his frame anyway. He’s quite lanky for his size and needs time to bulk up.. WR. Texas A&M. Josh Reynolds . 4. player

4th Round (via BUF)

player. 57. Some teams will overlook him because he was very quiet for most of 2015. He played much better in 2016 (8.5 sacks) but lost playing time due to a broken orbital bone from a fight with a teammate. That will overshadow how explosive and athletic a pass rusher Tyus Bowser is. The Bears could use more young outside linebackers in the stable what with Willie Young turning 32 and Pernell McPhee having his injury issues.. OLB. Houston. Tyus Bowser . 5

5th Round

QB. Ole Miss. Chad Kelly . 6. player. 57. Why would the Bears take a quarterback in the draft after they just traded for Garoppolo? Three reasons. Depth is a highly valuable thing at that position. Kelly is a talented young prospect who has starter potential but needs time to mature, making him a quality developmental project just in case Jimmy doesn’t work out. Lastly, he could make for a great trade chip in a few years to collect extra draft currency.

7th Round

One player who seems to keep getting off scot-free is punter Pat O’Donnell. He has been the epitome of average since he was drafted and hasn’t shown signs of getting any better. It’s time the Bears really started to push him with some competition. Austin Rehkow was a rock solid punter at Idaho. He could kick for distance but was particularly good at aimed kicks, pinning opponents inside the 20 and 10-yard lines.. P. Idaho. Austin Rehkow . 7. player. 57
