Trade(s):

WR Alshon Jeffery and 1st round pick (2018) to Patriots for QB Jimmy Garoppolo

There’s the plot twist. The Bears take a play out of the Patriots playbook by franchise tagging a valuable player and then using him as trade bait to another team. It’s hard to admit, but it looks like Alshon Jeffery is leaning towards an exit from Chicago. So the team decides to package him and their future 1st round pick to New England in exchange for their (hopefully) future franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo. The logic in this is plentiful.

The Patriots get a nice new toy for Tom Brady. One whom they have plenty of cap space to sign long-term. They also get that 1st rounder they’re coveting. On the flip side the Bears of course get the quarterback they’ve reportedly been targeting while only giving up one pick and a player they were probably going to lose anyway. It’s a high price to pay, yes. However, in this league a team either has a quarterback or doesn’t. That makes them expensive.

Jeffery cap gain = $15.826 million

Garoppolo cap hit = $1.108 million

New Salary Cap:  $71.2 million
