Carson Palmer is going to give it another go with the Arizona Cardinals in the 2017 season, hoping to finish what he started two years ago.

The problem is he’s running out of time. Despite another solid statistical season Palmer isn’t getting any younger. He’s 37-years old and will turn 38 in December. Already it was reported he might retire this offseason before ultimately making the decision to return. While the Cardinals are thrilled about that development, it was also a reminder of how little time they have left. Time to find his eventual successor at the position.

Most would expect that means the Cardinals will be looking towards the draft for options. However, unless they’re willing to invest a 1st round pick their options may be limited. Something key to remember is that Bruce Arians is an old school coach. He often prefers having a quarterbacks with at least some experience under his belt. This begs the question. Why aren’t people looking at the younger options in free agency?

Enter Mike Glennon. Remember him? At one point in time he was a promising 3rd round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A 6’6″ kid out of N.C. State who came in with obvious size, decent mobility and good arm. He ended up starting 18 games for the Bucs. Though he only went 5-13 over that span, he actually played fairly well. He threw for over 4,000 yards with 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Keeping in mind those Tampa teams were pretty bad at the time.

Glennon also showed some quality clutch and poise traits, like leading a comeback victory over the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

At 27-years old he still has plenty of football ahead of him. Arians likes quarterbacks with size and strong arms. It allows them to see the field well and deliver the ball downfield with accuracy. The exact type of offense he prefers. Glennon won’t command big money and would come in knowing he’d likely get his shot sooner than later with Palmer being both old and injury-prone. It’s a good match between team need and player type.
