The 3 Best Fits For Tony Romo After Dallas Cowboys Cut Him
By Erik Lambert
Jerry Jones may be lamenting the past and the what-ifs, but and the Dallas Cowboys really have no choice. They must move on from Tony Romo.
Dak Prescott is in place now. He’s a Pro Bowler and only going to get better with time. There is no justification for keeping the 36-year old veteran as a backup. Especially not at the current $24.7 million price tag it would mean. That’s just bad football business, and business has no place for sentimentality. In the that is the only thing holding Dallas back from moving on and letting Romo finish out his career on a team where he can actually play.
So unless an unlikely trade suitor emerges, the odds are growing that Romo will become a free agent within the next month. At that point it will be down to two choices for him. Either he decides to retire and likely pursue a spot on TV, or he searches for a new team with whom he might have a shot at winning a Super Bowl. Given how things ended for him in Dallas, the latter is far more likely. That being the case it’s pertinent to ask the question.
Which teams out there represent the likeliest landing spots for him? Here are three that stick out the most from the pack.
Houston Texans
Everything about this idea makes so much sense. Going to the Texans would mean Romo could stay in Texas. They have plenty of tools to work with too. That includes a stud wide receiver in DeAndre Hopkins and a quality running back in Lamar Miller. Of course he’ll also have the luxury of a defense. Something that was almost never the case during his best years in Dallas. Why wouldn’t he want to make such a union work?
Houston also has incentive. Their blockbuster deal for Brock Osweiler blew up in their faces this past season. His poor play was the primary reason they lost in the divisional round to the New England Patriots. This is a Super Bowl-ready roster that just needs a trigger man who can make some big plays happen and keep the offense respectable. Signing Romo to a cap-friendly deal is about the best they can hope for at this point.
