Player Comparison: Morris Claiborne, Dallas Cowboys

Claiborne’s measurables are very similar to White. Both are listed as 5’11” and Claiborne came in 3 pounds lighter than White, listing as 188 pounds. Claiborne had longer arms, listed at 33.25 inches, but smaller hands at 8.5 inches compared to White. Claiborne also had a 77-inch wingspan, which is larger than White’s.

While it has taken awhile, Morris Claiborne has shown shut down cornerback potential during his contract year in 2016 and has improved his technique tremendously compared to his last couple years when he was dealing with a couple injuries that have hindered his development.

While Claiborne is a better athlete, White also has similar upside if he plays as consistent as he did in 2016. I see White as a less polished and athletic version of Morris Claiborne 2.0 but the potential for White is there.

Projection: Late Round 1-Round 2

Best NFL Team Fits: Raiders, Cowboys, Bears, Saints

I could see the possibility for the Raiders to take White, which would be ideal because he could start at nickel right away and be very good in that position but I do not see the value nor the player be the actual pick there in the first round.

More from NFL Mocks

If the Cowboys lose Morris Claiborne in free agency; they could replace him with White, but I would think there would be better cornerbacks on the board if they did to address cornerback in Round 1. It still could be considered depending on if Brandon Carr retires in the offseason as well.

The Bears would be a decent fit depending on what they do in Round 1, as White could start next to Kyle Fuller, who has not played a ton due to injuries in his career.

The Saints are the other ideal fit I can see happening in the second round. White can start as the nickel, with Delvin Breaux and P.J. Williams being the #1 and #2 cornerbacks. White picked in the second round to the Saints is a good value and position of need for the Saints, as they need secondary help to bolster their defense.

The White pick would also make sense for the Saints as it is not a long drive away to New Orleans from Baton Rouge and has in-state familiarity in Louisiana.

Conclusion:

Although I watched fewer games in 2016 than 2014 and 2015, I still have some uncertainty about White’s consistency on the field. While I love his aggressive play on the field, his off the field leadership, and his refined coverage technique he displayed in 2016, I think there are more talented and more polished cornerbacks in this class of 2017.

That gives me pause for concern on the idea of a team taking White in Round 1 as I see him taken in Round 2 with upside as a potential starter as a nickel corner or #2 cornerback in the NFL.
