This pick was a little bit of a hat tip to our Sayre Bedinger, the resident Iowa fan who has raved about King’s ability for a good while now. When you turn on the tape, you quickly realize why King is widely rated as highly as he is. He’s a stout player who seems to play an NFL caliber cornerback at a very high collegiate level. There are a few flaws in his game, but I’d argue that he’ll be one of the safer picks in this class.
For the Packers, grabbing a cornerback in the first round wasn’t a product of the way the board fell necessarily, rather that King’s insertion onto the team’s 53-man roster immediately, filling a large hole, seemed too good to pass up on. There are plenty of areas that the Packers should spotlight on this year (though I think they could be going to the Super Bowl, but that’s an article for another day) — corner happens to be one that Ted Thompson could receive good value on in the early rounds this spring. If King checks out in Green Bay’s private meetings, he could be an easy fit come April.
