Running back is not a huge need for the Lions. Versatile back Theo Riddick has been a safety valve as the team deals with second-year back Ameer Abdullah being on injured reserve.
However, drafting right after the Lions are their rival, Green Bay Packers. A team that is in need of a running back. So the Lions strategically grab a special running back to team up and provide a three-headed monster at running back. While also blocking their rival from getting one of the best pure players in the NFL Draft.
Cook is a three-down back that has elite, game-changing speed. He also has accumulated over 4,300 rushing yards in three seasons in Tallahassee with 37 of his 45 career rushing touchdowns coming in the past two seasons. Cook also has 76 catches in his three collegiate seasons as well. What gives him appeal of a three-down back is the ability to provide pass protection. An underrated department for running backs.
Again, it is not a huge need for the Lions. However, the versatility provided by Cook along with Abdullah and Riddick gives the Lions plenty of options. It also keeps a prime weapon from teaming with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
