Not only did the Colts get a Hall of Fame coach, they got the pass rusher they needed for this defense.
The Colts can go in several directions with this pick. One of their biggest needs is a youthful pass rusher that can carry the mantle from longtime veteran Robert Mathis, who retired at season’s end. In Williams, the Colts take a 250lb edge rusher with elite quickness and bend.
Williams is also reliable in run defense with the burst to be active and not let run plays reach his outside shoulder. Williams has an explosive first step to go along with quick hands and pass rushing moves. The Alabama product has 27 tackles for loss and 18 sacks the past two seasons.
As mentioned, the Colts need an injection at outside linebacker. Mathis is past his prime and Trent Cole has missed more games this season (nine) than total sacks in two seasons (five). The team has relied manly on Erik Walden at the position. Walden at best is a rotational guy. So bringing in Williams gives the Colts a pass rusher with immense potential.
