Arizona cuts their former first round pick Michael Floyd following a DUI arrest

Michael Floyd was weeks away from entering free agency after being drafted in the first round by the Cardinals in 2012. Now, he has been sent packing by the organization after a DUI arrest.

Arizona announced the shocking roster move in a statement on Twitter Wednesday afternoon. Head coach Bruce Arians will address the situation in a press conference in the near future.

Floyd appeared to be a rising star on a Cardinals team destined to make a run at the Super Bowl this season. Regressions across the depth chart have left the Cardinals with a record of 5-7-1, with little chance of playing in the post-season.

Arians and team President Michael Bidwell, who chairs the league conduct committee, are making an enormous statement not just to the 53 men in their locker room, but thousands of people in the league and around the world.

After scoring six touchdowns in consecutive seasons, Floyd was limited to just four with the Cardinals in 2016. The team’s press release made it a point to admonish Floyd for his inconsistent hands, even linking a video to a critical fourth down drop.

Floyd has started 46 of 76 career games, scoring 23 touchdowns and amassing 3,739 receiving yards. With a pending free agent class lacking an extraordinary depth at wide receiver, Floyd was due for a large payday had he not been arrested.

Arizona will continue with Larry Fitzgerald going into this weekend with New Orleans, while also trying to reincarnate the ailing John Brown.
