Houston Texans Already Thinking Beyond Osweiler?

The Houston Texans knew an upgrade at quarterback could be the last piece to their potential championship puzzle. So they made a move to get one.

That’s not a crime. At some point teams have to take risks in order to succeed. Moving from the efficient-but-limited Brian Hoyer to the more talented Brock Osweiler was worth it. If the former 2nd round pick, who’d helped Denver win the Super Bowl, could live up to his full potential his signing would’ve been hailed as the steal of the century.

Instead people have begun to understand why the Broncos were hesitant to pay him more money. Osweiler just seems to lack a lot of key assets most good quarterbacks need. His vision, accuracy and pocket awareness are all not good. Sure he’s a giant who can move well and throw the ball a long way, but there’s more to the position than that.

Chris Wesseling of NFL.com put it into precise words.

"“For all of those resources poured into the offense, though, Osweiler’s attack has been a severe downgrade from the talent-starved smoke-and-mirrors show run by Brian Hoyer last season. The new quarterback has yet to demonstrate the accuracy, field vision, pocket movement and delivery of a franchise player. Of the 34 starting QBs graded by Pro Football Focus this season, he ranks dead last.”"

This has led to an undercurrent of belief that the Texans are thinking about a change. First there was the rumor that things got heated between Osweiler and head coach Bill O’Brien over play calling. Then the sleepwalk against Denver showcased just how inadequate the QB is against top defenses. He was exposed by them and by New England a few weeks prior.

Those are the two pillar franchises a team has to beat to get through the AFC to the Super Bowl.

If Osweiler can’t even perform halfway decent against them, then what is the point? The Houston Texans may have to shift their priorities for the 2017 season. Another move at the quarterback position is not out of the realm of possibility. In spite of the money invested the bottom line is this team won’t ever compete in that conference until they find a quarterback.
