One thing about the 2017 NFL draft, just like previous drafts, is that evaluating top prospects inevitably leads to making comparisons.

Namely comparisons with current or former pros. It doesn’t mean those players will have the same careers. It’s about giving fans an idea of the skill set these players have and what their ceilings (and limitations) might be. This first edition will focus on the quarterbacks. Nothing is set in stone and more names will be added in the future. As things stand though, this is where they are at.

Deshone Kizer (Notre Dame)

At the moment he is the hot name, and for good reason. Deshone Kizer looks like the total package. He’s a bigger quarterback (6’4″) with a well-distributed frame. He is highly mobile, able to tuck the ball and run for long gains when the situation call for it. His arm strength  is not lacking at all as he effortlessly pushes the ball down the field. At the same time he suffers from some mechanical issues and displays a somewhat slow and awkward delivery.

Comparison:  Colin Kaepernick

Please understand that this is a physical comparison. Kizer doesn’t have the same background or mentality as the 49ers former starter. He does however have a similar body build (almost identical) along with the mix of a rocket right arm and running ability. If Kizer proves himself to be more adept to the mental side of the game, something that ultimately doomed Kaepernick, he has a chance to become one of the best in the NFL.
