Detroit Lions: WR Marvin Jones has been phenomenal early
The Detroit Lions saw the departure of wide receiver Calvin Johnson this offseason, but replaced him with a budding star in Marvin Jones…
Marvin Jones isn’t making Detroit Lions fans ‘forget’ about Calvin Johnson, is he?
…is he?
Jones has been fantastic in the early portion of his stint with the Lions, catching 18 passes for 408 yards and two scores so far over the course of three games.
His career high in yards was last season in Cincinnati, where he racked up 816 yards receiving. He’s already halfway there, and we’re not even a quarter into the season yet.
Jones is averaging nearly 23 yards per reception, something I’m not sure he can keep up throughout the year, but he’s certainly making it hard to bet against him with plays like these:
Jones missed the entire 2014 season after a breakout, 10-touchdown season with the Cincinnati Bengals in just his second year in the NFL back in 2013. He came back in 2015 looking explosive again, setting a career mark with four catches of 40 yards or more.

This may be another story for another day, but the Cincinnati Bengals are clearly missing his ability to create opposite A.J. Green, while the Lions are enjoying great success through the air because of the dynamic threat they have in Marvin Jones.
Matt Stafford is completing 67.5 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. He’s been able to spread the ball around really well and Jones is helping make that possible.
I’ll say it again — he’s not making anyone forget about the great Calvin Johnson, but the blow has been significantly softened at this point. Jones has been a phenomenal free agent pickup from the Bengals, signing on this offseason for five-years, $40 million. With the current wide receiver Market, that looks like a nice bargain for Detroit considering Jones is just 26 years old.
Hopefully he and Matthew Stafford can keep this kind of chemistry going, and we can find out how high this guy’s ceiling truly is.
