Patriots Quarterback Jacoby Brissett Needs Surgery on Thumb
The New England Patriots currently do not have a quarterback ready to go for week four after Jacoby Brissett tears a thumb ligament in Thursdays win
According to multiple reports, New England Patriots rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett will undergo surgery after tearing a ligament in his thumb. Brissett reportedly injured his thumb in the second half of last nights 27-0 win over the Houston Texans.
Brissett’s injury isn’t believed to be serious, but his status will be questionable heading into week four.
The 3rd round draft pick out of NC State made his first career start in place of Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered a sprained shoulder in week two.
With Tom Brady still suspended one more week, the Patriots do not appear to have a quarterback on their roster ready to start in week four.
Wide receiver Julian Edelman played quarterback at Kent State, and was the designated “emergency quarterback” last night. The team worked out T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree prior to week three, but opted not to sign either of them.
Other veteran quarterbacks available on the free agent market include Matt Flynn, Mike Vick, Ryan Lindley, and Josh Freeman. Rookies who could be taken off of practice squads or signed in free agency could be former Alabama quarterback Jake Coker or North Carolina’s Marquise Williams.
Jacoby Brissett went 11-19 with 103 passing yards in his first career start in the NFL. He also rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown in the blowout win.
If there’s any positives in this situation, it’s that the Patriots have a long week to prepare for the Buffalo Bills. After that, Tom Brady returns to face the lowly Cleveland Browns.
