Chicago Bears: Interesting Roster Cuts They Could Sign
By Erik Lambert
The Chicago Bears will almost certainly dig through the roster cuts of other NFL teams in hopes of finding help for their roster before the regular season begins.
August 30th is the first deadline for cut downs. Rosters must go from 90 players to 75 in that span. Some teams have already gotten a jump on the action, perhaps giving those players a head start to finding work elsewhere. There were certainly a few surprise names in the bunch, including some who just might be able to help the Bears depending on their status. Expect this list to get bigger as further cuts are announced.
QB: Sean Renfree
The injury to Connor Shaw leaves the depth at quarterback in serious question, especially given how poorly Brian Hoyer has played. Sean Renfree is a former 7th round pick who was a success at Duke and mentored by the same head coach who developed Peyton and Eli Manning. He’s got size, a good arm and plenty of experience backing up Matt Ryan in Atlanta. At the very least he’d make a competant third string option who can push Hoyer for the #2 spot.
OT: Erik Pears
Chicago is hurting bad for help at the tackle position. Outside of Charles Leno and Bobby Massie, there really is nobody they can view as a dependable reserve. Erik Pears is 34-years old but he’s started every game over the past three seasons. His durability and experience would make for an ideal swing tackle they can plug in right away if they had to.

CB: Blidi Wreh-Wilson
Vic Fangio likes his cornerbacks with some size and length. Former 3rd round pick Blidi Wreh-Wilson was all about that when the Tennessee Titans drafted him at 6’1″. At times he has looked promising but constant coaching turnover and slight injury setbacks hampered his development. His experience would be a benefit in the depth department, and he also has a strong background in special teams.
CB: Melvin White
Same situation as Wreh-Wilson. A long corner who flashed at times with his former team but couldn’t stick in the starting lineup. Chicago Bears fans would love the intrigue of Melvin White because he’s a 6’2″ corner from Lousiana-Lafayette University. For those who are curious, that is the same school Charles Tillman came from, and he’s also 6’2″. Wouldn’t that be something. In truth White is 26-years old and still has some talent worth exploring while also offering special teams upside.
