Chicago Bears: Biggest 2016 Preseason Pros and Cons
By Erik Lambert
CON: Robbie Gould has lost his edge
Last year it was feared that veteran kicker Robbie Gould might be starting to slow down. His once trademark accuracy showed noticeable signs of slipping as he missed a number of key kicks. Word out of practice hasn’t done much to ease those fears and it only got worse when he missed a 48-yard field goal attempt against the Chiefs. NFL experts always say that when a kickers’ accuracy goes, it goes fast. Signs aren’t looking good for Gould to last beyond this year.
PRO: Pat O’Donnell improved
At the same time his special teams mate Pat O’Donnell may finally be turning the corner. The former 6th round pick had an average 2015 season as well and some wondered if his job was in jeopardy. Especially after the Bears brought in competition at the start of training camp. Seems it was all a ploy. O’Donnell responded to the challenge and has kicked very well throughout the preseason, averaging in the neighborhood of 48 yards per boot. That will be a huge help to the defense assuming it carries over to the regular season.
