Darius Slay (Detroit Lions)

More than ever the Detroit Lions know they must rely on cornerback Darius Slay to be their ace on the back end of the defense. Rashean Mathis has retired, so he is the best and most experienced cover man they have. He’s prepared for the challenge. Slay had two interceptions, 13 passes defended and 58 tackles in 2015. Under the direction of Teryl Austin and behind a solid line that knows how to get plenty of pressure, Slay is poised for a career-best year.

This was a tough call because the Lions do have some other intriguing options. Tight end Eric Ebron seems ready for a breakout as well now that Calvin Johnson isn’t there to hog so many targets from Matthew Stafford. The same can be said of receiver Marvin Jones, who won’t have the shadow of A.J. Green hanging over him. Another possibility? Defensive end Devin Taylor. He has improved a lot, going from backup to unquestioned starter. Still, Slay is the one who meets the requirements best.
