Coaching Changes

It will be entirely new faces on the sideline for the Terps this season. Athletic director Kevin Anderson made a splash with his hire of former Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.

While in Ann Arbor, the 48-year-old orchestrated a defense which ranked fourth overall in total defense and held opponents to 17.5 points per game. He also served as the defensive coordinator at Florida. He’s also had stints at both Stanford and Notre Dame.

Durkin brings with him a diverse group of assistants. Walt Bell will serve as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after leading Arkansas State to average 40 points per game last season.

On the other side of the ball, Andy Buh will look to build on Durkin’s success at Michigan. Buh, who was in the same role at Kentucky, Stanford, Nevada and Cal, worked with Durkin from 2007-2009.

All of the position coaches are new, as well. Most notably, former Virginia head coach Mike London was tabbed as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach. London is a tremendous recruiter and will guide Durkin during his first stint running a program.

The other position coaches include:

  • Pete Lembo-Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends
  • Dave Borbely-Offensive Line
  • Aazaar Abdul-Rahim-Defensive Backs
  • Matt Barnes-Linebackers
  • Chris Beatty-Wide Receivers
  • Anthony Tucker-Running Backs
