Chicago Bears: 2017 NFL Draft Need Power Rankings
By Erik Lambert
#2: Cornerback
The position lacked any definitive playmakers before Kyle Fuller underwent minor surgery on his knee. Without him it looks even sadder than before. Tracey Porter is the only stable veteran they have and that’s not saying much given his wildly inconsistent history. After that it becomes a depth chart chalk full of young unknowns and special teams aces. Deiondre Hall has some promise as a 4th round pick but he still has lots to prove.
So far Ryan Pace has avoided taking a cornerback high in the draft, proving himself a proponent of having a strong front seven on defense before anything else. There is nothing wrong with that strategy but at some point he’s going to have to accept reality and find somebody who can give the back end of the Bears defense some credibility in coverage. Vic Fangio may be able to mask such problems, but great defenses are not just great in one area.
