After drafting Ameer Abdullah last year to help balance-out the offense, few thought Detroit would be in the market for a running back.

Abdullah failed to impress as a rookie, managing less than 600 rushing yards and only two touchdowns.

He has missed time due to injury, sitting out of preseason action with a shoulder injury. While he is not on the physically unable to perform list, he was spotted wearing a non-contact jersey in practice.

With Detroit’s top playmaker Calvin Johnson out the door, Matthew Stafford will be looking for weapons to help generate offense. Marvin Jones, Golden Tate, and Eric Ebron will help in the receiving game, but the backfield will be shallow.

Behind Abdullah is Theo Reddick, Stevan Ridley, and Zach Zenner. While you can expect some production from that group, don’t expect them to strike fear into opponents.

Karlos Williams can create competition and push Ameer Abdullah in the final two preseason games, and possibly be the starter once his suspension is complete.
