A.J. McCarron

After nearly pulling off a win in the playoffs before his own defense ruined it, A.J. McCarron is looking good. The former Alabama standout is not only one of the best backups in the business, but now he’s becoming a big name to watch on the starter circuit. His performance in preseason seems to back that up as he’s completed over 67% of his passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The confidence is there. It’s just about getting the opportunity.

Odds are that won’t be coming with the Cincinnati Bengals. They remain committed to Andy Dalton as their starter. In fairness he’s a two-time Pro Bowler and nowhere close to being over the hill. So unless the Bengals are willing to entertain the idea of promoting McCarron, which seems unlikely then a trade seems almost inevitable. It will come down to how much the team trusts Keith Wenning to become the primary backup.
