player. 48. Firing Lovie Smith was a gutsy call by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, especially when it involved replacing him with a former offensive coordinator in Dirk Koetter who has never been a head coach before. Even so this was a clear decision with the intent of making sure Jameis Winston reaches his full potential as their new franchise quarterback. It seems the second-year man is taking the matter seriously too. Word is Winston arrived to camp in tremendous shape and more vocal a leader than ever before.
That is not their greatest concern. It’s what the Buccaneers are going to do about a defense that finished 26th in the league in points allowed last season. That was a big reason most of their spending and draft focus was on that side of the ball. Robert Ayers was a nice addition to their pass rush, as was 2nd round pick Noah Spence. First round pick Vernon Hargreaves should be a big help to their secondary too. If they can give Gerald McCoy some help, then the Bucs can’t be ignored in that division.
. . .
