San Diego Chargers: Joey Bosa Has More Leverage
By Erik Lambert
Progress between the San Diego Chargers and 1st round pick Joey Bosa on a contract have come to a dead stop and there is no sign of any relief in the future.
Clearly the young Ohio State defensive end wasn’t expecting such a problem when the team drafted but now looking back it’s clear he’s having some regrets. Even his own mother went on record stating she wished he’d pulled an “Eli Manning” and forced a trade during the draft to another team, like the Giants quarterback did back in 2004. Instead it looks like he was holding out hope for something to happen without success.
Now things have gone off the rails as not only will neither side budge, but the rookie is feeling resentful of the way the Chargers have handled the process as Bleacher Report revealed.
It certainly sounds like Joey Bosa has already had his fill of San Diego and wants out. Therein lay the problem. His window for leaving via trade, at least for this year, has closed. According to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams have the chance to trade their drafted players until the deadline of 30 days before the start of the regular season. That was August 9th. After that Bosa has until Week 10 to sign his contract or he will not be allowed to play in 2016.

If it gets that far the likeliest thing to happen is Bosa won’t sign any deal with the Chargers and then exercise his right to re-enter the 2017 NFL draft, by which point San Diego’s claim to him will have expired. It’s hard to imagine things could get that far but based on the constant stream of rumors indicating a growing animosity between the two sides, such a drastic measure may not be out of the question.
From Bosa’s perspective he can look at it as he just went back to college for his senior year since he came out as a junior. He’ll be 22-years old by that point, which is still very young. The San Diego Chargers will have been left with a wasted 1st round pick.
