By Erik Lambert
The 2016 NFL training camp season is underway and there are plenty of storylines to follow, including a host of a wild card names worth watching.
What exactly is a “wild card” player? Essentially they are names that have talent but for one reason or another can be considered a long shot to not only play but even make the team they’re on. Perhaps for one it’s a long layoff away from the game due to suspension. For another it was injury problems. For all it’s the same. High-risk, high reward and total unknown as to which way it could go for them.
Anthony Davis (OT, San Francisco 49ers)
There was a time that he was part of one of the best offensive lines in football back in 2013, but Anthony Davis has become an unknown quantity since. This is due to his rather abrupt and unexpected retirement in 2015, citing his desire to rest his mind and body. Now the league has granted his reinstatement. Beyond that is unknown. It’s unclear what the 49ers have planned for Davis. While their offensive line could use help, his layoff from the game creates uncertainty about his readiness. Never mind how the organization might feel about him leaving in the first place. Behind closed doors, there might still be some bitterness about that.
