Nicks Foles Signing with the Jets Makes Perfect Sense
After the Los Angeles Rams granted Nick Foles his release, one team sticks out as a perfect fit
With his famous 27-2 season in Philadelphia long-forgotten, Nick Foles is looking for work, and very few teams are hiring.
Only a couple of teams entered either free agency or the NFL Draft with a need at the quarterback position, and those needs were (for the most part) fulfilled. Denver drafted Paxton Lynch, Houston signed Brock Osweiler, and Los Angeles drafted Jared Goff.
The only team with an unsettled quarterback situation heading into training camp is the New York Jets. They have been holding out for Ryan Fitzpatrick to come down on his price, but have found no wiggle room in terms of both price and longevity.
New York has drafted two quarterbacks over the past two years: Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Of those two, Hackenberg is more likely to be the Jets long-term option.
Unfortunately, Hackenberg is not ready to start in the NFL. After playing two years behind one of the worst offensive lines in history, he needs to regain confidence and make some adjustments.
With Hackenberg not quite ready and Bryce Petty still learning some basic football language, Geno Smith remains as the only option.

We’ve seen what the former West Virginia quarterback can do in the NFL, and it isn’t much. New York needs a legit option for this season before turning the keys over to Hackenberg.
Ideally for Todd Bowles, that legit option would be Fitzpatrick. With the former Harvard starters’ future up in the air, Nick Foles appears to be the best candidate for the Jets.
Foles and Bowles (which is a great quaterback-head coach combo) were both a part of the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles. Bowles started the season as the defensive backs coach, and later transitioned into the defensive coordinator on an interim basis. Foles was a third round pick, and saw himself earn the starting job mid-way through the season when Mike Vick went down.
While the connection isn’t strong considering Foles and Bowles were on opposite sides of the ball, it’s a connection none the less.
If you need a one-year starter who could take you to a wild card game, Nick Foles is your guy. He’s not going to be the Pro Bowl MVP ever again, but he can play in the NFL. New York has a need, and Foles needs a job.
