Coaching Staff

Starting at the top, the hiring of Kirby Smart was ‘smart’ (no pun intended, I swear). If you’ve followed SEC football the past several seasons, Smart’s name is not new to you as he has been one of the most talked about assistant coaches in the nation as the defensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide since 2007. He adds Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, an assistant who has had success in recent seasons at Arkansas, Pittsburgh, and the NFL level with the Rams. Along with Chaney, Mel Tucker comes aboard as the defensive coordinator. Tucker has years of experience with the NFL as well as stints as Nick Saban’s assistant at Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama.

Hiring Shane Beamer, son of retired Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, was another solid hire as Beamer is in charge of tight ends & special teams. The names may not grab headlines, but the staff as whole has solid, reliable credentials. A well-rounded staff by Smart.
