Carolina Panthers:  The Greg Olsen trade

Sometimes it’s the simple moves that yield the most benefit. Greg Olsen had been a decent player during his stint with the Chicago Bears from 2007 to 2010. However, changes to their offensive scheme made the tight end less valuable.  So they decided to trade the former 1st round pick. The Carolina Panther, in need of more offensive weaponry to help out the rookie quarterback they were planning to bring in that off-season, sent them a 3rd round pick as compensation.

In a system much better suited for his talents, Olsen began to thrive almost immediately. He was instrumental in helping Cam Newton develop into a polished and confident passer and has since become one of the best at his position. These past two seasons he reached the Pro Bowl, topping 1,000 yards each time and being a key locker room presence in helping the Panthers reach Super Bowl 50.  Most didn’t think Carolina would get such a return from that move five years ago, but they were wrong.
