Minnesota Vikings:  The Jared Allen trade

To this day it’s mystifying why the Kansas City Chiefs decided to trade defensive end Jared Allen in 2008. He was coming of an All-Pro season where he’d posted 15.5 sacks. It was obvious he was becoming one of the dominant pass rushers in the game, yet they still convinced themselves it was the right decision to deal him to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 1st round pick. They certainly didn’t get any better when that happened. Meanwhile, the Vikings made out like bandits.

Allen became a force on their defensive front. In a span of five seasons he reached four Pro Bowls and in just six seasons total he amassed an incredible 89.5 sacks. This included a 22-sack season in 2011 that came a half sack shy of the tying the league record. He helped them reach the NFC championship in 2009 as well. There is no doubt that Allen was proof that teams paying the high price to trade for franchise tagged players can work out in amazing ways.
