Indianapolis Colts:  The Marvin Harrison trade

One trade to make up for another trade. That was what it felt like for the Indianapolis Colts. If felt like they were doing the right thing in 1990 when they traded up to the #1 pick to draft quarterback Jeff George. His talent was undeniable and represented the missing element they needed to finally become a contender. It didn’t work out. George proved too much of a head case and woefully inconsistent. Three years later they decided it was time to move on, and traded him to the Atlanta Falcons for a conditional pick.

The condition was that if George played over 75% of the offensive snaps in 1995, the pick would become a 1st rounder in 1996. Turns out that is exactly what happened. George led the Falcons to the playoffs that season and a year later the Colts got their 1st round pick, #19 overall. This they used to draft a quiet wide receiver from Syracuse named Marvin Harrison. By the time his career was finished 13 years later he had reached eight Pro Bowls, caught 1,167 passes for 15,463 yards and 130 touchdowns, and won a Super Bowl. He is now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
