9. player. 124. Success for the Kansas City Chiefs have always come through their defense. It’s been true the past few years, it was true in the 1990s and it was true when they won their only Super Bowl in 1969. As much love as Willie Lanier and Bobby Bell get for playing on that great unit, one of the reasons they enjoyed so much success was due to the presence of defensive tackle Buck Buchanan up front. What’s crazy about him is he was the 1st overall pick in the AFL draft in 1963, but the 265th pick in the NFL draft.

Safe to say the Chiefs knew exactly what they were getting when they made him the first African-American #1 pick in history. What they got was a ferocious interior pass rusher who not only dropped quarterbacks to the turf, but had such a long frame that he was one of the first to be truly great at batting down their passes. A six-time Pro Bowler, his performance in Super Bowl IV against fellow future Hall of Famer in center Mick Tinglehoff was proof that he was one of the greatest of his era and in Chiefs history.
. DT. Grambling State. Buck Buchanan
